Bandaranaike–Chelvanayakam Pact

The Bandaranaike-Chelvanayakam Pact was a 1957 agreement between Sri Lankan Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Tamil leader S.J.V. Chelvanayakam, aiming to address the rights and representation of Sri Lanka's Tamil-speaking communities. The pact proposed the establishment of a Tamil-majority state within a federal Sri Lanka, but it was ultimately rejected by the Sri Lankan government. This led to increased tensions between the Sinhalese and Tamil populations, contributing to the country's subsequent ethnic conflict.
