Controlled Substances Act

The Controlled Substances Act, codified at 21 U.S.C. § 801 et seq., is a federal law that regulates the manufacture, possession, use, and distribution of certain substances. The law classifies these substances into five schedules based on their medical use and potential for abuse. The classification of a substance into one of the five schedules determines the level of control and regulation imposed on it. The Act aims to control the availability and use of controlled substances in the United States.

The Controlled Substances Act establishes five schedules of controlled substances, with Schedule I being the most restrictive and Schedule V being the least restrictive. It is unlawful to manufacture, distribute, or dispense a controlled substance except as authorized by a registration issued by the Attorney General. The Act also prohibits the possession of a controlled substance with the intent to manufacture, distribute, or dispense it. Penalties for violating the Act can include imprisonment and fines.

The Controlled Substances Act requires that individuals and entities who manufacture, distribute, or dispense controlled substances register with the Attorney General. Registration is required for each location where controlled substances are manufactured, distributed, or dispensed.
