Federal Charter of 1291

The three communities of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden hereby enter into a perpetual alliance to defend their common liberties and rights. They pledge to support one another against any external aggression or internal oppression that threatens their autonomy. This bond is established to ensure the preservation of their traditional privileges and mutual security.

No member of this alliance shall accept any new lord or ruler without the prior consent of the other two parties. If any external power attempts to impose authority over one of the signatories, the others are obligated to provide military and financial assistance. This provision ensures that no single canton can be subjugated independently of the collective will.

Disputes arising between the allied communities shall be resolved through mutual arbitration and peaceful negotiation rather than through force. The parties agree to uphold the established laws and customs of their respective regions while respecting the sovereignty of each partner. Violence between allies is strictly prohibited and considered a breach of this charter.

This alliance is binding upon the heirs and successors of the original signatories for all time. The commitment to mutual defense and legal cooperation cannot be unilaterally dissolved by any single party. Future generations are required to honor the terms set forth in this document to maintain the integrity of the confederation.

The signatories declare their independence from the Holy Roman Empire and reject any claims of feudal overlordship. They affirm their right to self-governance and the administration of justice within their own territories. This declaration serves as the legal basis for their autonomous status and mutual recognition as equal partners.
