The Republic of Ireland Act, 1948, is a law that formally declared Ireland's status as a republic, ending its remaining ties to the British monarchy. It also removed the British monarch's role in the Irish state, with the President of Ireland becoming the head of state. This act came into effect on April 18, 1949.
