At TechCrunch Disrupt last week, ventureโ€‘capital partners Anuโ€ฏBharadwaj of Iconiq and Rajeevโ€ฏDham of Sapphire Ventures joined Superhuman Mail founder Rahulโ€ฏVohra to warn founders that the classic sign of productโ€‘market fitโ€”steady, sticky revenueโ€”is becoming harder to achieve in the AIโ€‘driven startup boom. The panel, held in San Francisco, highlighted how easy it is now to secure pilot deals but how difficult it is to turn those pilots into lasting, revenueโ€‘generating customers.

The discussion came as investors scramble to separate hype from real growth in an era where AI tools can be copied quickly and earlyโ€‘stage metrics are often inflated. Bharadwaj noted that many founders report โ€œARRโ€ without clarifying whether they mean true annual recurring revenue or a loosely calculated annualized run rate that counts shortโ€‘term pilots as yearโ€‘long income. She warned that this obfuscation can mislead investors, especially as chatter on X shows a surge of AI startups inflating ARR numbers to appear more stable than they are.

To cut through the noise, the speakers urged startups to focus on the quality of their revenue. Vohra described Superhumanโ€™s internal โ€œdelighted ARRโ€ metric, which tracks only the ARR from highly engaged users, giving a clearer picture of customer stickiness. He said churn and dollar retention rates are the true health indicators, and that founders should benchmark these figures against industry standards. Bharadwaj added that a red flag appears when a handful of customers dominate revenue or when those customers can easily switch to a cheaper alternative.

The panel concluded with a stark pivot rule: if a startupโ€™s net promoter score or similar engagement metric falls below 13โ€‘15โ€ฏpercent, founders should consider scrapping the current product, reusing the codebase and team to build something new. By insisting on transparent metrics and genuine customer delight, founders can better gauge whether they have truly achieved productโ€‘market fit or are merely riding a wave of AI hype.
