Four new species of frogs have been formally described from remote regions of Peru, a discovery announced by Florida International University biologist Alessandroโ€ฏCatenazzi and his team on Tuesday. The amphibians โ€“ two rainforest dwellers and two highโ€‘altitude stream specialists โ€“ were collected during field expeditions in the Cordillera del Cรณndor and the Manu National Park and have been given the scientific names *Hyloxalus condorensis*, *Hyloxalus manuensis*, *Pristimantis altiplano* and *Pristimantis nubecula*.

The find comes at a time when amphibians worldwide are facing unprecedented threats from habitat loss, climate change and a deadly fungal disease called chytridiomycosis. Peru, home to more than 800 known frog species, is a biodiversity hotspot but many of its remote habitats remain poorly surveyed. Catenazziโ€™s work builds on a decade of systematic sampling and DNA analysis that aims to fill gaps in the countryโ€™s taxonomic inventory, a crucial step for conservation planning. Without formal recognition, species cannot be assessed for protection under national or international frameworks.

Scientists say the new species highlight both the richness of Peruโ€™s ecosystems and the urgency of protecting them. The highโ€‘altitude frogs were found at elevations above 3,200โ€ฏmetres, where warming temperatures could shrink their already limited habitats. The rainforest species occupy microhabitats that are being fragmented by illegal mining and road construction. Catenazzi plans to collaborate with local NGOs and the Peruvian Ministry of Environment to conduct rapid assessments of the frogsโ€™ population sizes and threats. The data will feed into the IUCN Red List evaluation process, potentially securing legal safeguards and funding for habitat preservation.
