CoreWeaveโ€™s bond decline threatens financing for AI companies nationwide

CoreWeaveโ€™s highโ€‘yield bonds fell into distressed territory on Tuesday, when the spread over U.S. Treasury yields jumped to more than 1,000 basis points, a level investors typically label as โ€œdistressed.โ€ The shift was flagged by venture investor Chamath Palihapitiya, who warned that the companyโ€™s debt woes could signal a broader credit bubble in the fastโ€‘growing AI compute market.

CoreWeave, a cloudโ€‘computing firm that rents graphics processing units (GPUs) to AI developers, has been expanding rapidly since 2020, raising more than $1โ€ฏbillion in private financing to build data centers across the United States and Europe. The companyโ€™s growth has been fueled by soaring demand for AI training and inference workloads, which require large clusters of expensive GPUs. To fund that expansion, CoreWeave issued $500โ€ฏmillion of senior unsecured notes in early 2023, promising yields of 7.5% above Treasuries. As the Federal Reserve kept rates high and the AI hype cooled, investors began demanding higher compensation for risk, pushing the spread past the distressed threshold. The move comes as other AIโ€‘focused lenders, from ventureโ€‘backed credit funds to specialty finance firms, have seen similar pressure, raising concerns that a wave of defaults could tighten financing for the sector.

Analysts say the distress in CoreWeaveโ€™s bonds could force the company to renegotiate terms with its lenders, potentially swapping debt for equity or seeking a cash infusion from existing backers. Palihapitiyaโ€™s comment has already drawn attention from credit rating agencies, which may downgrade the issue, further raising borrowing costs for AIโ€‘related firms. If CoreWeave restructures, it could set a precedent for how private credit deals are handled in a market that has relied heavily on nonโ€‘bank financing. For now, the companyโ€™s leadership has not confirmed any specific plan, but they are expected to meet with major bondholders in the coming weeks to discuss options. The outcome will likely shape the availability of cheap capital for AI startups and could either cool the current rush for compute or trigger a broader reassessment of risk in the sector.
