Former U.S. Army soldier Michael J. McAllister was sentenced on Tuesday to 99 years in prison for the 2022 murder of his newlyโ€‘wed wife, combat medic Sergeant Emily McAllister, and for stuffing her body in a storm drain in Anchorage, Alaska. The judge said the killing was โ€œpremeditated, brutal and callous,โ€ noting that McAllister had wheeled his wifeโ€™s corpse around in a metal trash can before dumping it.

The crime shocked a community already grappling with a surge in domesticโ€‘violence cases involving veterans. Emily, 28, had returned from a tour in Afghanistan two months earlier and was celebrated for her service. Her husband, a former infantryman who had left the Army in 2020, had a documented history of angerโ€‘management issues and had been cited for a protective order that was never enforced. The couple had married in June 2022, and the murder occurred just three weeks later on a rainy night in the Anchorage suburb of Spenard. Police found the body after a neighbor reported a foul smell coming from a storm drain, leading to a search that uncovered the metal trash can used to move the body.

During the trial, prosecutors presented surveillance footage of McAllister loading the trash can onto a bicycle and a forensic report confirming the bullet that killed Emily matched the rifle found in McAllisterโ€™s garage. The defense argued that McAllister suffered from untreated postโ€‘traumatic stress disorder, but the jury rejected that claim, convicting him of firstโ€‘degree murder, tampering with a corpse and aggravated assault. Emilyโ€™s parents, who spoke through a spokesperson, called the sentence โ€œa small comfortโ€ but thanked the community for its support. Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson released a statement condemning the act and urging stronger enforcement of protective orders.

McAllisterโ€™s attorneys have filed an appeal citing alleged procedural errors, but the sentence is likely to stand for the foreseeable future. The case has reignited calls for better mentalโ€‘health resources for veterans and stricter enforcement of domesticโ€‘violence protections in Alaska. State legislators say they will introduce a bill to create a rapidโ€‘response team for veterans in crisis, hoping to prevent tragedies like the McAllistersโ€™ from recurring.
