Achy from sitting at a desk all day? Try doing this

Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center discovered that walking for five minutes every halfโ€‘hour can offset the health risks of prolonged sitting, and National Public Radioโ€™s Body Electric program put the finding to the test with more than 20,000 listeners last year. Participants who took the fiveโ€‘minute walking breaks reported higher productivity, lower fatigue, and a noticeable drop in back and shoulder aches. The studyโ€™s simple prescription is now being promoted as a quick way for deskโ€‘bound workers to protect their bodies without overhauling their schedules.

Americans spend an average of 9.5 hours a day sitting, whether at a computer, laptop, or phone. That level of inactivity has been linked to fatigue, weight gain, back and joint pain, and chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease and certain cancers. Health experts have long warned that a sedentary lifestyle erodes physical fitness and strains the musculoskeletal system, but many workers find it hard to break the habit of staying glued to a screen.

The walking challenge was paired with a suite of ergonomic tips and easy stretches that can be done at a desk. Physical therapist Vinhโ€ฏPham recommends a โ€œ3โ€‘D Tโ€‘spine rotationโ€ to combat midโ€‘back rounding: stand with one foot back, lift the opposite arm, twist toward the back foot, hold two seconds and repeat ten times before switching sides. For eye strain, experts suggest a simple eyeโ€‘exercise that relaxes the focus muscles after long screen sessions. Together, these movements aim to relieve tension, improve flexibility, and reduce digital eye fatigue, which can cause headaches and blurry vision.

NPR now offers a worksheet for tracking walking breaks and links to detailed instructions for the stretches. Health officials say the approach could become a workplace standard if employers adopt regular movement reminders. By inserting short walks and targeted stretches into the workday, employees can stay more alert, avoid chronic pain, and lower longโ€‘term disease risk without sacrificing productivity.
