President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that speed limits built into the U.S.‑provided Starshield satellite system are slowing Ukrainian forces’ ability to coordinate drone strikes against Russian troops. Frontline units reported that the equipment stops working when vehicles travel at 130‑160 kilometres per hour (80‑100 miles per hour) across several sectors of the front. The comment was made during a press briefing in Kyiv as the war enters its second year.

Zelensky’s warning comes as Ukraine relies more heavily on high‑speed communications to direct precision attacks from unmanned aerial systems. Starshield, a military‑grade satellite network supplied by the United States, was intended to give Ukrainian commanders real‑time data even in contested areas. However, the built‑in speed caps were designed to protect the system from interference and to manage bandwidth. As the front lines become more fluid, commanders say the limits are now a tactical obstacle, forcing them to slow convoys or risk losing contact during fast‑moving operations.

In a separate development, a Ukrainian army brigade demonstrated a new rescue technique using an aerial drone. The brigade released a video showing the drone hovering low, lowering a winch, and lifting a wounded soldier out of the combat zone. The soldier, dressed in full combat gear, attached himself to the winch and was hoisted safely to a waiting vehicle. Officials called the operation the first drone‑assisted evacuation of its kind on the Ukrainian front.

Zelensky’s criticism may prompt Washington to revisit the Starshield parameters, though no official response has been recorded yet. If the speed limits are lifted or adjusted, Ukrainian units could coordinate strikes more swiftly, potentially changing the tempo of battles in the east. Meanwhile, the drone rescue showcases how Ukrainian forces are improvising with limited resources, turning commercial‑grade technology into battlefield solutions. Both stories underline the growing importance of technology in a war where speed and adaptability are decisive.
