The UK government will spend £100 million to create a national AI Biosecurity Lab, a “world‑first” institute aimed at defending the country against emerging biological threats, the chancellor announced as part of Wednesday’s Budget in London. The funding will be matched by AI developers OpenAI and Anthropic, which will provide £200 million in model credits for the lab’s work.

The move comes as policymakers warn that advances in artificial intelligence are reshaping risk landscapes. Biosecurity experts say AI can accelerate the design of harmful pathogens, while cyber‑security teams warn that AI tools also make attacks easier. The British government says it needs a dedicated centre to stay ahead of these converging dangers and to keep the benefits of AI from leaving workers behind.

The AI Biosecurity Lab will bring together leading scientific talent and industry partners, according to AI Minister Kanishka Narayan. He described it as a “major new global institution” that will protect citizens as AI technology matures. In addition to the £100 million for the lab, the Budget earmarks £120 million for the AI Security Institute, which was set up in 2023 to test the safety of powerful models. A further £60 million will fund a “National Cyber Shield” that uses agentic AI to strengthen cyber‑defences, and £70 million will go to a National Exposure and Real‑Time Vulnerability Centre that will scan critical infrastructure for weaknesses. The combined spending signals a broad push to embed AI across security, industry and public services.

The new lab is expected to create skilled jobs and reinforce Britain’s industrial base. By backing home‑grown science, advanced chips and domestic AI firms, the government hopes to build a self‑reliant security ecosystem. If successful, the institute could set global standards for AI‑enabled bio‑risk management and demonstrate how nations can harness emerging technology without compromising safety. The next steps include appointing a director, defining the lab’s research agenda and rolling out the promised model credits over the coming months.
