Trump announces progress on new US military base in Poland

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Washington and Warsaw are making major progress toward establishing a U.S. military base in Poland. The announcement comes as the Trump administration reviews its overall troop presence in Europe. A permanent base would give the United States a foothold on NATO’s eastern flank and allow quicker deployment of forces to the region.

Poland has long been a key partner in NATO’s eastern defence strategy. Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has pushed the alliance to strengthen its front line. A U.S. base in Warsaw would enable rapid movement of troops and equipment and signal to Russia that the U.S. remains committed to European security. It would also give NATO a stronger presence closer to the Russian border.

The idea of a permanent U.S. presence in Poland dates back to the 1990s, but has faced political opposition in the U.S. and resistance from some European allies. In 2023, the U.S. and Poland signed a memorandum of understanding to expand joint exercises. Trump cited that agreement as a step toward the base. Polish Defence Minister says the project would create jobs and boost local industry. U.S. officials estimate the base would cost about $300 million a year.

The next step is for Washington to finalize legal and logistical details with the Polish government. If approved, construction could start in late 2025, with full operation by 2027. The move could alter the balance of power in Eastern Europe and may prompt Russia to increase its military posture. NATO allies will monitor the decision closely as they weigh the implications for regional stability.
