Pinball Expo 2026 opened on Saturday in Las Vegas, and for the first time the eventโ€™s floor was divided into three zones that showcased the hobbyโ€™s past, present and future side by side. Organisers placed vintage cabinets from the 1970s next to the latest digitalโ€‘hybrid machines, while a dedicated area displayed prototypes that blend physical play with artificialโ€‘intelligence scoring. The layout let attendees compare how the sport has evolved in a single walk.

The splitโ€‘floor concept reflects a broader revival in pinball that began after the pandemic. Collectors rushed to buy classic machines as a nostalgic escape, driving up auction prices and prompting museums to expand their displays. At the same time, manufacturers have invested in new technology to attract younger players who grew up on video games. Companies like Stern and Jersey Jack have rolled out โ€œsmartโ€ boards that track player behavior and update rules via Wiโ€‘Fi. The expoโ€™s organizers said the threeโ€‘zone format was meant to highlight that momentum and to show that the hobby is not stuck in the past.

More than 300 exhibitors filled the 80,000โ€‘squareโ€‘foot venue, and the show attracted an estimated 12,000 visitors, a record for a pinballโ€‘only convention. Highlights included a restored 1979 Bally โ€œEight Ballโ€ that drew long lines, a new Stern โ€œStar Trekโ€ table that uses LED lighting to create immersive scenes, and a prototype from a startup that lets players program custom rule sets on a tablet. Industry veteran Steve Ritchie praised the event, saying the mix of old and new โ€œproves pinball still has a place in the arcade world.โ€ Several indie creators announced limitedโ€‘run runs that will ship later this year, and a panel of developers revealed a partnership with a major streaming platform to broadcast live tournaments.

The expoโ€™s success sets the stage for a busy year ahead. Manufacturers plan to release at least ten new titles before the next expo in 2027, many of which will incorporate the AI features debuted at this show. Collectors are expected to keep driving up the value of rare vintage machines, while hobby shops hope the modern releases will bring fresh foot traffic. Organisers say the threeโ€‘zone model will become a permanent fixture, giving fans a clear view of where pinball has been, where it stands now, and where it is heading.
