Strava announced on Tuesday that its app now lets users search for routes using plainโ€‘language descriptions and see offline maps directly on the home screen, with turnโ€‘byโ€‘turn audio navigation slated for release later this year. The update is rolling out to Android and iOS devices worldwide, and the new search bar accepts everyday terms like โ€œhilly loop near downtownโ€ or โ€œcoastal ride 10โ€ฏkm.โ€ Users can tap a result and instantly view the path without an internet connection, a feature aimed at cyclists and runners who often train in areas with spotty data coverage.

The change comes after years of user feedback that Stravaโ€™s map tools were too technical for casual athletes. Competitors such as Komoot and AllTrails have long offered simple route finders and voice guidance, prompting Strava to close the gap. Earlier this year the company introduced a beta for offline map downloads, but many users complained that the maps could not be accessed from the main screen. By integrating the maps into the home view, Strava hopes to make planning and navigating routes as quick as opening a music app. The plainโ€‘language search also reduces the need to know exact coordinates or trail names, lowering the barrier for newcomers who want to explore new routes without spending time fiddling with filters.

Strava says the audio navigation feature will launch in a phased rollout starting in November, initially supporting only cycling before expanding to running and hiking. The voice prompts will give distance to the next turn, alert users to upcoming steep climbs, and warn of hazards such as sharp bends. The company is testing the function with a small group of users in the United States and Europe, and plans to collect feedback before a global release. If the rollout goes smoothly, Strava could see a boost in engagement from safetyโ€‘concerned riders who prefer not to glance at their phones while moving, and it may set a new standard for fitness apps that blend planning and realโ€‘time guidance in a single, easyโ€‘toโ€‘use interface.
