Journalists arrived by helicopter at the Rosebank offshore oil field on Wednesday, just hours after the UK government gave the green light for gas production at the nearby Jackdaw field. The landing marked the first media visit to Rosebank, a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) 80 miles northwest of Shetland, as Energy Secretary Miattaโ€ฏFahnbulleh prepares to decide its fate. The field is larger than Jackdaw, promises higher profits for owners Adura and Ithaca, and would emit more greenhouse gases.

The visit comes amid a national debate over climate change, energy security and the economy. The UK has pledged to cut emissions while still needing reliable energy supplies, and Rosebank sits at the centre of that tension. Critics argue the project undermines climate goals, while supporters say it secures jobs and revenue. The timing is critical: the consent for Jackdaw shows the government is moving forward on new North Sea extraction, and Rosebank will be the next test of policy. Stormโ€ฏBoelo was forecast to hit the area, adding a physical reminder of the harsh conditions offshore workers face.

Aboard the Petrojarl Rosebank, 122 crew members live and work in rotating twoโ€‘week stints. Nicola Boyd, who runs the helideck, described the routine as โ€œgood funโ€ but warned it demands steady legs and a strong stomach. Mechanical technician Ewan Leonard recalled a recent 30โ€‘metre swell that rocked the vessel, noting that winter will likely bring more severe seas. Despite the environment, the ship offers singleโ€‘person cabins, a gym, a sauna and a wellโ€‘stocked kitchen. Production supervisor Douglasโ€ฏHogge said the facilities make long shifts more bearable, and the crew enjoys fresh air on deck when conditions allow.

The decision on Rosebank will shape the UKโ€™s energy landscape for years. If approved, the field could boost domestic oil output and generate tax revenue, but it will also add to the nationโ€™s carbon footprint. Environmental groups are preparing legal challenges, while industry leaders argue the project is essential for energy stability. The next weeks will reveal whether the government balances climate commitments with economic pressures, and whether the floating platform will become a symbol of compromise or controversy.
