Barack Obama appeared at a rally in Detroit on Saturday to back Abdul Elโ€‘Sayed, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate seat from Michigan. The former presidentโ€™s appearance came as the primary race tightens and analysts say the cityโ€™s large Black electorate could decide the outcome. Elโ€‘Sayed, a former Detroit health commissioner and publicโ€‘health professor, is seeking the seat that will be open after longtime Sen. Debbie Stabenow retires. Obamaโ€™s speech was brief but emphatic, urging voters to turn out for Elโ€‘Sayed and to protect โ€œthe progress we built together.โ€

The race has become a flashpoint for the stateโ€™s Democratic Party. Michiganโ€™s Black voters make up roughly oneโ€‘fifth of the electorate, and Detroit accounts for more than 80 percent of that bloc. In the June 4 primary, Elโ€‘Sayed faces actorโ€‘turnedโ€‘politician Hill Harper and businessman Nasser Beydoun, both of whom have attracted national attention and significant fundraising. Elโ€‘Sayedโ€™s campaign has struggled to match Harperโ€™s early polling lead, which placed him at about 35 percent versus Elโ€‘Sayedโ€™s 30 percent in a recent internal survey. The contest has also been marked by sharp personal attacks, with Harper questioning Elโ€‘Sayedโ€™s past statements on policing and Elโ€‘Sayed accusing Harper of flipโ€‘flopping on key issues. Obamaโ€™s endorsement, first announced in March, is intended to shore up Elโ€‘Sayedโ€™s support among Black voters who turned out in large numbers for Obama in 2008 and 2012. Local leaders, including Detroit mayor Mike Duggan, praised the former presidentโ€™s visit and pledged canvassing and phoneโ€‘banking efforts in the weeks ahead.

The next step is the June primary, where turnout in Detroitโ€™s precincts will be crucial. If Elโ€‘Sayed can convert Obamaโ€™s endorsement into votes, he could close the gap with Harper and secure the Democratic nomination. A win would position him as the partyโ€™s candidate in a general election that could be competitive in a swing state. Democrats see the seat as vital for maintaining Senate control, and both campaigns are ramping up ground operations and voterโ€‘education drives. The outcome will also signal how much influence former presidents still wield in shaping downโ€‘ballot races.
