Nepal and China suspend rescue efforts as barrier lake overflows

Nepal and China have suspended rescue operations for flood survivors in their border region due to the overflowing of a "barrier lake" created by a devastating flash flood two days ago. The decision came after Chinese rescue teams were forced to retreat to safer ground as the risk of the lake bursting increased, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Nepalese authorities also paused their search efforts for 90 minutes, as the threat of additional flooding loomed large.

This disaster unfolded when a glacier collapsed, sending a torrent of ice, water, rock, and mud cascading down the Himalayan valleys, destroying villages and critical infrastructure. The flood, which hit Rasuwa district in Nepal, created a natural dam as debris trapped water, forming the barrier lake. As water continues to flow into the lake, officials are on high alert. The lake's volume has surged to over 2.5 million cubic meters, raising alarms for downstream communities. Narendra Pariyar, the top administrator in Rasuwa, confirmed that river levels are rising, although the exact height of the surge remains uncertain.

The aftermath of this calamity has been tragic, with the death toll exceeding 470 in Nepal and at least five confirmed deaths in Tibet. Nearly 1,000 people remain unaccounted for, and about 1,550 have been rescued. Conditions for those trapped in the disaster zone are dire, with destroyed roads isolating many survivors. The Nepal Centre for Disaster Management has reported that rescue operations are extremely challenging. Currently, about 800 people have been airlifted to safety, while 700 have been rescued by land. Relief efforts are also hindered, as the overflowing lake has blocked the delivery of essential supplies.

Looking ahead, with over 90,000 people estimated to be affected by this disaster, both countries are ramping up rescue efforts. China has deployed around 500 military and paramilitary personnel, while Nepal has mobilized 30,000 security forces to search remote areas. The situation remains critical, and the number of missing persons is expected to rise as efforts continue and conditions evolve.
