Hisbah raids target Sokoto’s underground nightlife

Sokoto, Nigeria — A pulsating nightlife thrives under the watchful eyes of the Hisbah, the Islamic morality police, in Nigeria’s conservative northern region. Despite strict religious codes and rising insecurity, young people gather in unlicensed bars and makeshift entertainment spots after dark, defying both social norms and potential danger.

The Hisbah force operates across 12 northern states, enforcing Sharia law by cracking down on alcohol, music, and gender mixing. Their presence has intensified in recent years as state governments push stricter Islamic governance. But growing youth unemployment and urban migration have fueled an underground nightlife, where young adults seek escape from poverty and stifling traditions. In Sokoto, one of Nigeria’s most conservative cities, Hisbah officers regularly raid drinking spots, arresting both vendors and patrons. Still, the trade persists—vendors hide kegs in backrooms, and patrons move between venues under cover of night.

The conflict reflects a broader tension in Nigeria’s Muslim-majority north, where Islamic law coexists uneasily with modern urban life. Hisbah officials argue their work is vital to preserving moral order amid rising crime and banditry. But critics say their heavy-handed tactics push youth toward extremism rather than preventing it. A local youth leader, who asked not to be named, said many young people feel trapped between poverty and oppression, driving some toward radical groups like Boko Haram.

Security analysts warn the standoff could worsen if the government doesn’t address unemployment and inequality. The Hisbah’s actions, while aimed at curbing vice, may instead deepen frustration. Meanwhile, the nightlife continues—underground, resilient, and increasingly visible.
