Senate Democrats on Friday sent a letter to Elon Muskโ€™s socialโ€‘media platform X, accusing the company of giving the cryptocurrency prediction market Polymarket โ€œpreferential treatmentโ€ in its timeline algorithm. The letter, signed by Sens. Catherine Cortezโ€ฏMasto, Jacky Rosen, Adamโ€ฏSchiff and Richardโ€ฏBlumenthal, includes screenshots that they say show Polymarket posts appearing higher in usersโ€™ feeds than comparable content from other predictionโ€‘market sites.

The complaint comes amid growing scrutiny of Xโ€™s contentโ€‘ranking system since Musk bought the platform in 2022. Critics say the algorithm can amplify certain voices while suppressing others, a concern that has intensified as the site has become a hub for political discourse and financial speculation. Polymarket, which lets users bet on the outcome of realโ€‘world events, has drawn attention from regulators for its use of cryptocurrency and for hosting bets on politically sensitive topics. Lawmakers argue that any bias in Xโ€™s timeline could influence public opinion and market behavior, especially ahead of the 2024 election cycle.

The Democratsโ€™ letter points to three screenshots taken over the past month that show Polymarket posts receiving โ€œtrendingโ€ labels and appearing in the โ€œFor Youโ€ feed, while similar posts from competitors like Augur or traditional news outlets were relegated to less visible sections. The senators say the platformโ€™s lack of transparency makes it impossible to verify whether the treatment is intentional or a byโ€‘product of the algorithm. In a prior hearing, Musk defended Xโ€™s approach as โ€œfree speechโ€‘first,โ€ but he has not responded publicly to the latest accusations. The letter also references earlier congressional inquiries into Xโ€™s handling of misinformation and extremist content, suggesting a pattern of opaque decisionโ€‘making.

The senators say they will consider holding a hearing to compel X to disclose how its timeline algorithm works and whether it applies different rules to financialโ€‘prediction services. They warn that unchecked bias could warrant new legislation to enforce fairness and transparency on major tech platforms. X has not yet commented on the letter, but the companyโ€™s legal team is expected to respond soon. The dispute highlights the broader clash between Silicon Valleyโ€™s selfโ€‘regulation and congressional efforts to rein in the power of socialโ€‘media giants.
