Google Chrome introduces AI autofill to extract data from Gmail

Google said on Wednesday that Chrome will soon be able to pull information from usersโ€™ Gmail accounts to fill online forms automatically. The new AIโ€‘driven autofill can suggest flight confirmation numbers, membership IDs, tracking codes, order numbers, addresses, phone numbers and even creditโ€‘card details when a user is completing a web form. The feature is part of an update to Chrome that rolls out this week to U.S. desktop users and to the iOS and Android versions of the browser that support Googleโ€™s Gemini AI.

The change builds on Googleโ€™s Personal Intelligence platform, which already lets users link Google apps to Gemini so the assistant can fetch data and answer complex questions. By extending that capability to autofill, Google hopes to make Chrome more convenient and keep users inside its AI ecosystem. The move mirrors Appleโ€™s popular autoโ€‘fill of verification codes sent by text, a feature that many users consider essential. Google says the data used for autofill is encrypted and that users can turn the feature on or off in Chromeโ€™s settings, preserving control over sensitive information.

If the rollout goes smoothly, Chrome could become a more attractive option for people who fill out many online forms, from travel bookings to eโ€‘commerce checkouts. The ability to pull details directly from Gmail may reduce the time spent copying and pasting information. Critics may still question how much personal data the browser accesses, but Googleโ€™s encryption promises to protect it. As the feature expands beyond the United States, it could set a new standard for browserโ€‘based AI assistance, prompting competitors to develop similar tools or improve existing ones. The next steps will likely involve broader geographic releases and refinements based on user feedback.
