A woman armed with a Glock stormed a school bus carrying 37 children after she claimed the driver had pulled out in front of her, police said Monday. The incident happened on a weekday morning on Route 12 in the town of Brookville, Indiana, around 7:30 a.m. The driver, a 45โ€‘yearโ€‘old teacher, was pulling the bus onto a side street when the woman, identified as 32โ€‘yearโ€‘old Sarah Thompson, drove her SUV straight into the busโ€™s path. She then entered the vehicle, brandishing the handgun and demanding the driver step aside.

The event comes amid growing concerns over school safety and gun violence in the United States. In the past year, several highโ€‘profile attacks on school buses and schools have spurred debates over security protocols, driver training, and gun control. Brookvilleโ€™s school district has recently upgraded its bus fleet with GPS trackers and reinforced doors, but the incident shows that threats can still arise from outside the vehicle. Thompson told police she feared the driver was about to reverse into her car and that she was protecting herself and the children.

Police arrived within minutes, and officers found Thompson with a Glock 19 in her lap and a warning shot fired into the air. She was arrested on felony weapons charges and is being held on $25,000 bail. The busโ€™s 37 passengers, all elementary school children, were escorted to a nearby school building by the driver and a deputy. None of the children were injured, and the driver sustained no physical harm. Parents of the children have expressed relief that no one was hurt, but many are calling for stricter safety measures and clearer communication protocols between drivers and parents.

Investigators are reviewing dashโ€‘cam footage and interviewing witnesses to determine the sequence of events. Thompsonโ€™s attorney says she will plead not guilty and that the case will be heard in the county court next month. The school district is holding a meeting for parents and staff to discuss the incident and to review emergency response plans. The event has reignited discussions among lawmakers about tightening gun licensing requirements and improving school bus safety standards across the state.
