The Tibetan Plateau has warmed and become wetter since the 1950s, yet the region is now more vulnerable to hotโ€‘dry extremes that combine high temperatures with drought. Scientists say that the rise in overall rainfall does not reduce the risk of these compound events, which threaten water supplies, agriculture and glacier stability.

The shift toward wetter conditions began in the early 1950s as the plateauโ€™s average temperature climbed by roughly 0.4โ€ฏยฐC per decade. Precipitation increased by about 2โ€ฏ% per decade, driven partly by changes in atmospheric circulation and the expansion of monsoon systems. However, the same warming has stretched the thermal limits of the plateau, pushing temperatures past thresholds that trigger intense heat waves even during wet periods.

Researchers attribute the growing frequency of hotโ€‘dry events to the combined influence of the Elโ€ฏNiรฑoโ€“Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation. When ENSO is in a strong Elโ€ฏNiรฑo phase, moisture is drawn away from the plateau, while the North Atlanticโ€™s pressure patterns can suppress rainfall. The overlap of these drivers creates windows where temperatures soar and precipitation drops sharply, amplifying the risk of droughts despite an overall wetter trend.

The implications for the plateauโ€™s communities and ecosystems are serious. Farmers who rely on glacial meltwater face unpredictable water availability, and the increased heat can accelerate glacier retreat, reducing longโ€‘term water storage. Scientists warn that adaptation strategies must focus on waterโ€‘efficient agriculture and early warning systems for heat waves, rather than assuming that more rain automatically lowers drought risk.
