UEFA has rejected the Republic of Ireland's request to avoid playing against Israel in future competition draws, stating that such decisions are made on a case-by-case basis primarily guided by security considerations. The announcement comes as the two teams are set to face each other in the Nations League on September 27 and October 4.

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) had formally asked UEFA to keep Ireland and Israel apart in light of the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. FAI chief executive David Courell expressed disappointment over the rejection, noting that the request followed their pairing in February's Nations League draw. UEFA clarified that while they consider requests to separate teams, decisions are made based on the specific circumstances of each situation, particularly the security context between the countries involved.

The Israel Football Association (IFA) reacted to Courell's comments, questioning whether a formal request had actually been submitted to UEFA. IFA spokesperson Shlomi Barzel suggested that the focus should be on football, emphasizing their commitment to professional preparations rather than engaging with statements that lack substance. The fixtures have sparked controversy in Ireland, where members of the FAI voted last November to urge UEFA to suspend the IFA from European competitions, and leading Irish footballers have actively campaigned for a boycott of the upcoming matches.

Ireland's designated home match on October 4 will take place behind closed doors in Backa Topola, Serbia, instead of Dublin. Additionally, Irish fans will not receive tickets for Israel's home fixture in Debrecen, Hungary, the weekend prior. The decision underscores the ongoing complexities surrounding sports and politics, as the conflict in the region continues to impact international relations and sporting events.
