More than 1,000 NHS operations were cancelled in May and June as record heatwaves hit the UK, a report by Carbon Brief shows. The cancellations affected 150 hospitals across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, cutting scheduled surgeries, diagnostic scans and outpatient procedures. Patients waiting for elective surgery were told to postpone, while urgent appointments were rescheduled. The heatwave pushed temperatures above 30 °C for weeks, stressing hospital staff and equipment.
The NHS has guidelines for working in heat, but the scale of this summer’s temperatures exceeded what most hospitals were prepared for. Heat can cause staff fatigue, dehydration and heat‑related illness, which can compromise patient care. It also affects air‑conditioning systems and the functioning of sensitive medical devices. Climate scientists say such heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense due to global warming. The UK’s 2024 heatwave set new records, with several cities recording temperatures over 35 °C. The NHS had to cancel operations to keep staff safe and to ensure that operating theatres could maintain the required temperature for sterile environments.
NHS England said the cancellations were unavoidable and that patient safety was the priority. A spokesperson noted that the health service would work with hospitals to reschedule surgeries and that urgent care would remain available.
