African retailers face increasing competition from Chinese online fashion giants Shein and Temu, which are rapidly growing in popularity among young urban consumers. Shein launched in South Africa in 2020, followed by Temu in 2024. The appeal of their low prices, vast product selection, and aggressive social media marketing has changed the shopping habits of many. For a generation accustomed to browsing platforms like Instagram and TikTok, purchasing fashion items with just a few clicks has become the norm.

The rise of these platforms raises significant concerns for local retailers, manufacturers, and job markets in Africa. A recent study by the Localization Support Fund revealed that Shein and Temu generated approximately 7.3 billion rand (around $405 million) in South Africa during 2024, capturing 3.6% of the overall clothing market and a staggering 37% of online sales in the sector. This shift has tangible consequences, with an estimated 8,100 jobs in manufacturing and retail lost during this time. Projections indicate that by 2030, over 34,000 additional jobs could be at risk if this trend continues.

Simon Eppel, research director for the South African Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU), argues that the rapid market penetration of these platforms poses a serious threat to the local industry. He noted that these companies have siphoned billions of rands from local sales, undermining domestic manufacturers. SACTWU is advocating for stricter regulations, including a potential ban on these apps in South Africa, as a way to protect local jobs and businesses.

Industry experts highlight the challenges small African retailers face in keeping pace with the speed and agility of online giants like Shein and Temu. These companies leverage data analytics to identify consumer trends, while influencers and frequent discounts keep customers engaged. In price-sensitive markets, the allure of affordable products becomes a significant draw for consumers. Tsonam Cleanse Akpeloo, chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries, emphasizes that attractive pricing is vital for consumers looking to stretch their budgets. The ongoing competition highlights the need for local retailers to innovate and adapt if they hope to survive in this evolving landscape.
