Gen Z turnout at Burning Man fell sharply this year as the desert festivalโ€™s costs and time demands push the famously free-spirited event beyond reach for many young participants.

The annual Black Rock City census shows a 20% drop in attendees aged 18-24 compared with 2023, continuing a trend that began after the pandemic. Organizers say rising ticket pricesโ€”now $575 for early entry and $1,500 at the gateโ€”are only part of the problem. Flights to Reno, Nevada, campsite fees, and supplies for the week-long event can easily top $2,000 for a single person. Time off work and travel logistics also clash with Gen Zโ€™s shorter attention spans for multi-day commitments.

The decline mirrors broader shifts in how younger Americans spend money and time. Surveys show Gen Z prioritizes experiences over possessions but is less willing to save for months or skip paychecks for a single event. Meanwhile, older generations and wealthy tech workers are still snapping up tickets, widening the age gap on the playa. Burning Manโ€™s leadership acknowledges the shift, but says the festival remains committed to accessibility and plans to expand outreach programs for lower-income participants.

If the trend continues, organizers may need to rethink pricing, sponsorships, or even the length of the event to keep younger crowds coming. The stakes are high: Gen Zโ€™s participation has fueled the festivalโ€™s culture and volunteer base for years. Without it, Burning Man risks becoming a nostalgic relic of the 1990s rather than a living cultural movement.
