A Missouri father was arrested after police discovered a baby girl with multiple injuries caused by being swung and shaken by her dad. The 8‑month‑old was found in a state‑of‑origin home with bruises on her arms, legs, and torso. Law enforcement officers said the baby was held upside down by the legs and swung twice a day for “toughening” the child up. The father, who had no prior criminal record, was taken into custody on suspicion of child abuse and neglect.

Child‑abuse cases spike when parents use violence to try to build toughness. In 2023, Missouri’s child‑welfare agencies reported over 12,000 incidents of physical abuse involving infants and toddlers. Experts say that shaking or swinging can cause brain injury, bone fractures and internal bleeding. The father’s claim that he was “toughening” his daughter up shows a dangerous misunderstanding of parenting. It also reflects a broader trend of parents using harmful discipline tactics under the belief that they are strengthening their children.

Police seized medical records and video footage from the home. The baby’s doctor noted a fractured rib and bruises that matched the father’s description. Child protective services are now involved and the baby has been removed from the home. The father faces charges of aggravated child abuse and neglect. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a lifetime ban on contact with children. The case has drawn attention from state officials, who are reviewing the training of law‑enforcement officers in spotting signs of infant abuse.

The investigation will move to the county court, where a judge will decide on bail and a hearing. The baby is currently in foster care. The state is considering new guidelines that would require mandatory reporting of any infant who is shaken or swung. The case is a stark reminder that parents who think rough play is protective are putting their children at serious risk.
