Chinese swimmer Zhang Zhanshuo made history at the Asian Games in Tokyo, becoming the first athlete to win seven gold medals in a single edition of the competition. The 19-year-old secured his record-setting achievement on Friday by clinching the men’s 400m freestyle title in a Games-record time of 3 minutes and 41.28 seconds. After the race, he sat on the lane divider, counting off his medals on his fingers, a visual testament to his remarkable accomplishment.

Zhang’s success comes amid a strong showing from China in the swimming events, where they claimed 30 of the 42 gold medals available. With the Los Angeles Olympics just under two years away, this performance signals China’s deep talent pool and preparation for the global stage. In addition to his four individual golds in freestyle events, Zhang also contributed to three relay victories. He expressed satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing the importance of staying grounded despite his success: “The Asian Games are not my ultimate goal,” he said.

On the track, Thai sprinter Puripol Boonson also made headlines, winning the men’s 100m race in 9.90 seconds, breaking his own Games record set earlier that day. This victory marked Thailand's first gold medal in the men’s 100m since 1978. In the women's event, China's Chen Yujie took home gold in a record time of 11.06 seconds. These triumphs highlight the growing competitiveness of athletics in Asia, particularly in sprinting events.

As the Asian Games draw to a close, other sports have also seen impressive performances. Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo added to his medal collection by winning the men’s vault, capping off a successful week for him. Meanwhile, South Korea’s women’s basketball team edged out China in a semifinal match, setting the stage for a gold medal showdown against Japan. With the world championships approaching, athletes are already shifting focus to their next challenges, ensuring that the momentum from this event will carry into future competitions.
