Tyler Robinson, the 24-year-old man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk outside a Utah church on May 4, has entered a not guilty plea to murder charges that could bring the death penalty under Utah state law.

Robinson was arrested hours after the shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saintsโ€™ temple in Sandy, Utah, where Kirk had been scheduled to speak. Police say Robinson approached Kirk as he left the building and opened fire, killing the 44-year-old co-founder of Turning Point Action, a major conservative youth organization. Surveillance footage and witness statements led authorities to Robinson, who was taken into custody without incident. Kirkโ€™s death marked the first high-profile political assassination of a conservative figure in the U.S. since the 2016 murder of Democrat Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona.

Utah is one of 27 states that permit capital punishment, though executions have been rare in recent years. The last time Utah carried out a death sentence was in 2010, when Ronnie Lee Gardner was executed by firing squad. Robinsonโ€™s case could become the stateโ€™s first murder trial with a potential death penalty in over a decade. Legal experts say the prosecution will likely focus on evidence such as the weapon used, Robinsonโ€™s alleged motive (still under investigation), and any prior statements or online activity suggesting premeditation. Kirkโ€™s family has called for justice, while Robinsonโ€™s defense team has not yet publicly revealed their strategy.

Prosecutors have 60 days to decide whether to seek the death penalty. If they do, the case would enter a lengthy pretrial phase before a jury is selected. Defense attorneys may argue self-defense or mental incapacity, though no public evidence has emerged to support either claim. The case is expected to draw national attention given Kirkโ€™s influence in the conservative movement and the rarity of political violence in Utah. Kirkโ€™s organizations had been vocal critics of progressive policies, and his death has reignited debates over political rhetoric and security for public figures. Regardless of the trialโ€™s outcome, the shooting has already left a lasting impact on Utahโ€™s political landscape and the broader conservative movement.
