At least 1,002 children have died from measles in Bangladesh, marking the world's worst ongoing outbreak of the disease. Health officials from the Directorate General of Health Services reported 187,484 measles infections since the outbreak began in March, underscoring the severity of the crisis.

This outbreak is linked to significant gaps in the countryโ€™s vaccination program, exacerbated by political turmoil in 2024 and 2025 after the ousting of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. During this period, changes in vaccine procurement policy led to a shortage. The World Health Organization and UNICEF have pointed to these issues as key factors contributing to the current crisis. Public health experts are alarmed, with Professor Mahmudur Rahman describing the situation as unprecedented, stating that Bangladesh has never experienced such high mortality rates from measles.

In response to the outbreak, a nationwide emergency vaccination drive launched in April managed to vaccinate 18 million children. However, officials estimate that around four million children were left unvaccinated, hampering efforts to achieve herd immunity. Zahid Raihan, a spokesman for the Directorate General of Health Services, acknowledged that the goal was to reduce casualties and emphasized ongoing efforts to reach the remaining unvaccinated children.

The outbreak is putting immense pressure on hospitals already grappling with a surge in dengue fever cases. Over 45,000 individuals have been hospitalized for dengue, with recent days seeing record admissions and fatalities. As the health system strains under these twin public health crises, the urgency to vaccinate against measles remains critical.
