Around 100 influencers and content creators have been accredited for this year's US Open, sparking a debate about etiquette in tennis. This is double the number of influencers invited last year. Their presence has raised concerns about how to engage a new audience while maintaining respect for the game's traditions.

Tennis has several unwritten rules, such as apologizing after winning a point from a net cord and not disturbing players during points. These customs are vital for the sport's integrity and are often expected from both players and spectators. However, the influx of influencers has led to incidents that challenge these norms, including a recent incident during Naomi Osaka's first-round match. A group of influencers used a portable ring light during her serve, prompting a reprimand from the umpire. Osaka later commented on the need for respect in the sport, noting that spectators should familiarize themselves with tennis etiquette.

World number four Coco Gauff weighed in on the matter, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the sport's decorum. While she welcomed the idea of attracting a new demographic to tennis, she likened it to dressing appropriately for a red carpet event. Gauff's sentiments reflect a broader concern among players that the excitement of engaging younger audiences should not come at the expense of the game’s traditions.

Daniil Medvedev, the men's seventh seed, offered a different perspective. He believes that increasing awareness and viewership is beneficial for tennis. Medvedev trusts the United States Tennis Association to manage this transition effectively. As the tournament continues, it remains to be seen how the introduction of influencers will shape the atmosphere at the US Open and whether a balance can be struck between modern engagement and the cherished etiquette of the sport.
